PraxisAuril delivers knowledge-based training on technology/knowledge transfer and commercialisation issues by combining a thorough, professional education model with international academic and business excellence. We have the UK's most research intensive universities as members which means we can share the very best of a range of approaches that the UK has in innovation, entrepreneurship, knowledge and technology transfer practice. Our trainers have worked and lived every aspect of technology transfer, knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship and research commercialisation. 

We have run courses in Australia, Brazil, China, Columbia, India, Ireland, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, Thailand and the UK, and have delivered professional training to around 3000 individuals from 40 countries. We submit a proposal for approval and deliver the training at a venue and date agreed with you.

As well as taking our expertise overseas, we also bring back learning and insights to our UK members who benefit from our work, through shared insights and best practice.

What training courses can PraxisAuril offer?

Information on our standard UK courses can be found here and a list of courses we have run internationally is here.  But we don’t believe that we should just transfer UK courses to an international setting.  Instead we will work with you to develop a course that is absolutely right for your territory and for your trainees.  That way, you get the benefit of the extensive experience of PraxisAuril in both technology transfer and in training, but tailored to have the greatest impact for you.

Do you only offer stand-alone courses?

No.  We will work with you to identify the type of training you want.  This could be a single course delivered once; the same course delivered on multiple occasions to different trainees; or an entire curriculum for a single group of trainees over an extended period. 

Where do you run your courses?

Where would you like us to run them?  We can come to you or you can send a group of trainees to the UK.  We’ve done both very successfully.

Who will design and deliver the training?

This will depend on exactly what training you want, and whether you have sector-specific requirements e.g. life sciences, engineering, energy etc.  We will work closely with you on identifying what you need, and the best trainers to deliver this.  Thanks to PraxisAuril’s extensive network, we can draw on the expertise and enthusiasm of a large number of trainers.  These are all people who are highly experienced and successful technology transfer and commercialisation professionals, but also top-class trainers.  For multi-day courses we usually supply at least two highly qualified and experienced people.

What training methods do you use?

We adapt the training to fit the needs of the trainees.  But training is always most effective when it is interactive and engages the trainees themselves.  That’s why we have a major emphasis on the use of case studies, group work, problem solving etc.  And because our trainers have such a wealth of experience in technology transfer, entrereneurship, knowledge exchange and commercialisation they are able to draw on a huge range of real-life examples.

What will it cost?

Every course is different so we can’t give you a standard figure.  It will be influenced by location, numbers, length of course, amount of development required etc.  We appreciate that cost can be a big issue, and have often worked with clients to access supporting funds from relevant sponsoring organisations.  Please get in touch with us and we can give you a better idea once we understand your needs.

How do I become accredited as a Registered Technology Transfer Practitioner?

One route to becoming RTTP accredited is by gaining 60 Continuing Education (CE) credits awarded from attending PraxisAuril or partner training courses, plus submitting a 1,000 word write-up about a significant technology or knowledge transfer achievement. Dr Nessa Carey

Nessa is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) and joined PraxisUnico a International Director in 2014. Prior to this she spent 13 successful years in senior positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, with roles including Senior Director in External Research and Development Innovation at Pfizer, Director of Research at CellCentric and Head of Biology at TopoTarget.  In these positions she gained extensive experience in what industry seeks from academia, in contexts ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations. Prior to this, Nessa was a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, where she is now a Visiting Professor.  Her academic background means that she understands the drivers and difficulties in knowledge transfer for both the academic and industrial communities.  She also holds advisory positions with a number of UK research funding agencies.

Nessa is highly experienced in the fields of communication and training.  In addition to her academic teaching, she has a wealth of experience as a trainer, which has included delivering courses for Imperial College School of Medicine and the Royal College of Surgeons (UK and Ireland). 


Richard Brooks

Richard Brooks is a former non-executive director of PraxisAuril and co-founder of Flexible Directors, which has provided flexible Finance Directors on a part-time or interim basis for 23 years and helps organisations across many sectors - including technology, food, retail, manufacturing and not-for-profit - overcome their barriers to growth. He is an investor in start-up technology businesses and since 2009 has been on the finance and tax committee of the Bio Industry Association.

He is a presenter on entrepreneurship workshops for engineers and physicists in developing countries, organised worldwide by the Institute of Physics. In 2014 he also presented on the Science Technology and Engineering for Development workshop in Islamabad organised by the US State Department.


Dr Alison Campbell

Alison is Director of Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI). KTI is a national resource, responsible for the promotion, development and management of Ireland’s knowledge transfer system.

With over 20 years working at the academic-industry interface, Alison's experience includes business development and industry collaboration, IP management, out-licensing, start-up company creation, executive education, policy and the impact of research and innovation. During her career, she has worked in the biotech industry, led technology transfer and research support offices and worked as an independent consultant specialising in technology transfer and open innovation.

Alison is a former non-executive director of PraxisAuril and Portfolio Chair for International Development. She is also a former Director of the global Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP) and a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP). Alison has served as a non-executive director on a number of companies and acted as an advisor to government departments in the UK and overseas. She was awarded an OBE for her services to UK knowledge transfer in 2010.


Dr Phil Clare

Phil is a member of the HEFCE Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee of Council and a board member of PraxisAuril. He is a registered technology transfer professional (RTTP). Phil is Associate Director of Research Services and Head of Knowledge Exchange at the University of Oxford. Research Services supports all aspects of research strategy and negotiates and administers research grants and contracts.  The team is also responsible for research ethics and integrity, clinical trials governance, IP rights due diligence and related Knowledge Exchange activities.  This includes developing new ways for the University to work with industry and coordinating knowledge exchange activity across the university.  Phil is responsible for the Knowledge Exchange and Impact Team (KEIT) and the Intellectual Property Rights Management Team, negotiating some strategic contracts and working closely with Isis Innovation Ltd, the University’s wholly-owned technology transfer company.


Maureen Kelly

Maureen is an experienced intellectual property and information technology solicitor with Keystone Law. She is a registered technology transfer professional (RTTP) and works across a wide variety of sectors including healthcare, technology, education, travel, media and entertainment. Amongst other things she specialises in facilitating knowledge transfer between research organisations and industry. She has been planning, negotiating, drafting and closing technology transfer deals for 20 years with a particular focus on research collaborations and licences.

Prior to joining Keystone, Maureen spent 10 years with a London City law firm and three years as an in-house solicitor with Cancer Research Technology, the technology transfer company of Cancer Research UK. Maureen has enjoyed working as a trainer for PraxisAuril since 2004. She has designed, directed and provided training on numerous courses.


Robert Marshall

After more than two decades working at a senior level in the university sector and manufacturing management, Robert Marshall now provides training, consultancy, personal coaching and advice on technology transfer, commercial negotiation, conflict resolution and communications for a wide range of private and public sector clients worldwide. He is passionately interested in the psychology of the workplace, negotiation and dispute resolution.

Robert was Head of Technology Transfer at the University of Cambridge, where he was instrumental in the creation and development of the Technology Transfer Office (now called Cambridge Enterprise). For four years he was Director of Research & Business Services at the University of East Anglia (UK), and before that he worked in manufacturing management, consultancy, research management and as a quality manager in specialist engineering companies.

He is a former member of the Bank of England’s Consultative Group and has served on the governing council of The Association for University Research and Industry Links (AURIL).


Dr David Secher

In 2002, together with Lita Nelsen of MIT, David Secher founded Praxis (now PraxisAuril). He has served as chairman or as a director at PraxisUnico since then and in September 2012 became one of our Patrons. David is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP). David Secher is an independent consultant in the areas of research commercialisation, intellectual property and technology transfer in the UK and internationally. Recent assignments include work in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Chile, Lebanon, Jordan, Mexico and Europe.   As a consultant, he has advised universities, governments and individuals on commercialisation of intellectual property, as well as acting as a non-executive director of high technology and investment companies.

David is based in the University of Cambridge and is a Life Fellow and Senior Bursar of Gonville and Caius College.

Previous roles include Chief Executive of the N8 Research Partnership (a collaboration of the eight most research-intensive universities in the North of England); Director of Research Services, University of Cambridge; Director of Drug Development, Cancer Research Campaign (now Cancer Research UK); and Director of Monoclonal Therapeutics, Celltech Ltd.   His PhD work at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology was with the late César Milstein (Nobel Prize-winner for discovery of monoclonal antibodies). Together with Derek Burke, David made and patented the first monoclonal antibody to human interferon.

David was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion in 2007, in recognition of his contributions to creating "environments that favour enterprise, specialising in the practical aspects of commercialising the results of academic research".


Dr Malcolm Skingle

Malcolm is a former director of PraxisUnico and chaired its Industry Engagement Committee. He has an exceptional breadth of experience in the management of research activities and has authored more than 60 publications including articles on the interface between industry and academia.

Malcolm has managed Academic Liaison at GlaxoSmithKline for more than twenty years, leading staff in the UK and US. His role involves close liaison with several groups outside the company e.g. government departments, Research and Funding Councils, small biotechnology companies and other science-driven organisations. He sits on many external bodies and several UK University Department advisory groups and he sat on the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) Main Panel A. He also chairs several groups including the Diamond (Synchrotron) Industrial Advisory Board, the Science Industry Partnership skills initiative and the ABPI group working on academic liaison.

Malcolm was awarded a CBE in the 2009 Queen's Birthday Honours List in recognition of his contribution to the pharmaceutical industry as well as an Honorary Professorship from the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham and an honorary DSc from the University of Hertfordshire.
