Cancer is the UK’s biggest killer. One in two people will develop cancer at some point during their lifetime. It’s a stark statistic, but while more people are being diagnosed with cancer, survival is at an all-time high. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress and see three in four patients surviving

the disease by 2034. CRUK is the leading independent cancer research organisation, and invests more in almost every type of cancer than any other research organisation outside North America. Through the charity’s institutes, and all leading UK academic and clinical institutions, it invests over half the UK’s cancer research, over £500m per year.

CRUK has a well-established partnering capability. Last year alone the organisation undertook over 80 major agreements, formed 4 new spin-out companies and several drug discovery alliances. Moving forwards the focus will be increasingly strategic with a view to building long-term commercial partnerships with organisations that share CRUK’s goals.

The Opportunity

There is a really exciting opportunity to join CRUK’s Commercial Partnerships (CP) team as the Associate Director, Opportunity Sourcing and Translation (OST). Reporting to the Chief Business Officer, you will be responsible for the search, sourcing and evaluation of new projects with commercial/translational potential that may ultimately benefit cancer patients.

As the Associate Director leading the team, you will have responsibility for applying funding and other resources for the sourcing, development and implementation of OST strategic plans for translation of CRUK funded research, including driving project acquisition, active project development, intellectual property strategy, and managing overall portfolio balance. You will ensure that these developments are closely aligned to the needs of colleagues in Commercial Partnership’s (CP) Business Development & Transaction (BD&T) group to facilitate BD&T’s subsequent commercialisation efforts. Success in this role means that you are able to provide leadership and direction to the project-related OST axis of CP operations and performance in order to maximise positive commercial and patient benefit outcomes. You will provide critical analysis of proposed new projects and more complex ventures (spin-outs; alliances), develop intellectual property protection plans and define strategies for development of the portfolio through working with, and influencing CRUK-funded academics and, institute directors in the areas of, drug discovery/development, biomarkers, diagnostics, medical devices, digital health and research reagents.

The ideal candidate will have an excellent scientific academic record (PhD or equivalent), combined with experience in translating research discovery and pre-clinical science within a relevant biomedical field (e.g. medical technology, pharmaceuticals etc). You will have a strong analytical mind-set combined with the strategic and commercial capability to identify and develop new opportunities for collaboration. Equally important are first-class interpersonal skills with a track record of building and leading teams and developing productive, strategic relationships and working across complex and often matrixed organisational structures.

If you share the vision, ambition and values of CRUK and want to play a role that will impact millions of people for years to come, we hope you will download the candidate pack and recent annual review and submit an application.
