Technology Transfer Executive

An exciting opportunity is available to join the  University of Aberdeen’s Impact and Knowledge Exchange team in Research & Innovation (R&I).  The University has an extensive track record for supporting commercialisation, playing an important regional economic development role, with R&I having a responsibility for supporting the academic Schools in developing and delivering their research, impact and industry growth plans.


The Technology Transfer Executive  role encompasses  working in partnership with clients, businesses,  researchers and inventors, and other R&I colleagues to develop impact in collaboration  with industry and through commercialisation of University of Aberdeen intellectual property (IP).  .  The post will have a responsibility for identifying intellectual property and supporting commercialisation opportunities, including licensing, collaborative development with industry and supporting  new technology-based start up and spin out companies in the life sciences, helping to drive the ambitious targets within the University’s Strategic Plan Aberdeen 2040 and supporting the goals under the Aberdeen City Region Deal to drive innovation and economic diversification of the region.  The Technology Transfer Executive will play  a key role in supporting a thriving centre of R&D in the life sciences through commercialisation of new inventions and discoveries.


We are seeking candidates to match our ambition for growth in this strategically important area for the university, with a strong analytical skills, an understanding of service delivery, excellent interpersonal and communication skills in addition to a degree in the life sciences and some working knowledge of intellectual property management, an understanding of the academic research environment and particularly of the university funding mechanisms.  Experience of managing projects and communicating with both academia and industry is also required.  For a Grade 7 appointment, several years’ experience of working in a technology transfer, product innovation, knowledge exchange or research commercialisation role, knowledge of IP due diligence and the patenting process, and a track record in negotiating and securing commercial deals involving intellectual property will be required.


Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6/7 scale (£33,797 - £49,552 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.
