Data Integrity & Quality Assurance Programme Director: University of Bristol

The University of Bristol is at the forefront of efforts to improve the robustness of academic research.  We have a vision to be world leading in developing and implementing best practice in data integrity and research quality.

As a result of a generous donation we are looking to appoint a Director of Data Integrity and Quality Assurance to lead an ambitious project to establish a quality assurance framework and begin the development of a roadmap to implement this framework across the Faculty of Life Sciences. The longer-term ambition is that the project will serve as “proof of principle” for other Faculties, and in turn other universities, and a become recognised as model for best practice, with the UoB becoming sector leader in this space.

The role will be based within the Research Governance team, managed by the Director of Research, Contracts, Compliance and Governance, with dotted line reporting to the Associate Pro-vice Chancellor for Research Culture.

The role will be accountable to and be subject to the oversight and guidance of a steering committee comprising internal UoB and external representatives. The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the project and for liaising with the Dean and Faculty Research Director to ensure successful delivery.  They will be expected to work with academic and professional service colleagues from within the Faculty of Life Sciences and RED. They will need to be able to influence key stakeholders internally and externally to advocate for the project as well as managing relevant relationships.

What will you be doing?

Key duties include:

  • Embedding foundational training in core data integrity skills and transparent reproducible workflows at all career stages
  • Establishing a framework for ensuring data integrity and quality assurance based on training, transparency, documentation and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Developing and progressing a roadmap for embedding a quality assurance culture across the University, including incentives, robust monitoring and evaluation processes
  • Evaluating the model and promoting the approach across the University of Bristol and the wider UK higher education sector
  • Interacting with the UK Reproducibility Network and promoting the model to other national Reproducibility Networks
  • Influencing opinion and managing relationships with key internal stakeholders across the University of Bristol and external stakeholders across the UK sector
  • Representing the University of Bristol through sector engagement with the aim of establishing our reputation as being at the forefront of developing and adopting best practice

You should apply if

  • You are a senior professional with direct experience of delivering improvements in research standards in an industry setting.
  • You have significant experience of implementing quality assurance systems
  • You are passionate about the research reliability and reproducibility agenda
  • You are a strong and experienced leader with a track record of influencing senior colleagues
  • You are confident and can demonstrate a high level of emotional intelligence, balancing high standards of service delivery and customer expectations.
