The Centre for Rural Creativity at Shetland College UHI and Shetland Arts Development Agency are inviting creative practitioners, researchers, professionals and arts organisations to join us in exploring, creating and debating creative practice and collaboration in the creative economy. This conference will look to the multitude of multidisciplinary research and knowledge exchange across the creative industries and creative economy, with a focus on islands, culture and heritage, and young people. We are particularly interested in proposals that look at innovation, challenges and opportunities in these areas or invite new perspectives on the perceived ‘urban and rural’ divide.
Economic Intelligence Wales’ first annual report highlights confidence in Welsh business sector despite UK uncertainty

Small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in Wales have higher levels of confidence than their UK counterparts, despite challenging business conditions and increasing uncertainty of UK and global economic prospects, according to the first annual report published by Economic Intelligence Wales (EIW) today. The new research unit is a collaboration between Cardiff Business School, the Office for National Statistics and the Development Bank of Wales, created to monitor the activity of Welsh SMEs, factors affecting their development and the progress of the regional economy.

The first MICRA showcase will be exploring areas for collaboration based on key research specialisations of the partner institutions, as well as featuring some of our successful existing commercialisation success stories. There will be poster presentations from projects being funded by the MICRA programme, and breakout sessions after the presentations for each of the topics. This is an invitation-only event which is taking place alongside the British Science Festival on the University of Warwick Campus - with over 20 free events taking place throughout the day, it’s another great reason to come along!

Birmingham City University will tackle the issue of employability across the region with a DataJam West Midlands event this September. The two-day event, which runs from 11-12 September, brings together experts, professionals and practitioners from a number of sectors to discuss and identify solutions to the West Midlands’ employability concerns. Businesses will be able to find answers to a number of issues, including recruiting the right skills for their company and influencing regional skills provision. The event is also an opportunity to pitch questions to delegates to find solutions to various business challenges.

A new government £16 million health improvement programme in the North East and North Cumbria has been awarded to a collaboration led by Newcastle University and hosted by Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust. The regional collaboration, involving 56 organisations across North Cumbria and the North East, is being led by Professor Eileen Kaner of Newcastle University will tackle issues causing health and care inequalities.
