The SHAKE Climate Change programme is specifically designed to attract entrepreneurs or start-ups who have developed early stage science or tech-based ideas that can have a significant impact on climate change, as well as form the basis of a sustainable and socially responsible business within the sector. SHAKE Climate Change brings together experts from Rothamsted Research, Cranfield University, University College London, and the University of Hertfordshire with the financial backing of the Societe Generale UK Foundation to deliver world-class science, technology and business expertise to the programme.

A review of university-investor links has been published, commissioned by Research England from Mike Rees, former deputy group CEO of Standard Chartered, start-up commercialisation expert and angel investor. Research England asked Mike Rees, former deputy group CEO of Standard Chartered, to review ways to strengthen university access to finance that supports spin-out company formation and university-investor relationships. The review focused on universities with large-scale investor links and those seeking support through schemes, such as the Research England Connecting Capability Fund (CCF). The Rees Review listened to advice from a broad range of stakeholders, through more than 90 interviews, and drew evidence from a data report by Tomas Coates Ulrichsen (Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI) Policy, University of Cambridge), also commissioned by Research England.

CRACK IT Challenges are designed to accelerate the development of new technologies which minimise animal use or improve animal welfare. The focus is on research and innovation which leads to marketable products or improvements in business processes. The 2019 CRACK IT Challenges competition consists of three Challenges identified jointly by the NC3Rs and Sponsors who provide in-kind contributions such as data, compounds or equipment.

The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Services Framework is a national agreement available to members of NEUPC, LUPC, SUPC, APUC, NWUPC, HEPCW. The IPR Services framework agreement gives members of NEUPC, LUPC, SUPC, APUC, NWUPC, HEPCW access to suppliers who can provide legal advice and guidance, licensing and registration services on all matters relating to the creation, development and production of patents, trademarks, copyright, design rights, trade secrets and intellectual property rights. NEUPC will be holding supplier review meetings with all the approved suppliers on the intellectual property rights (IPR) services framework from Monday 29th to Wednesday 31st July and would appreciate feedback on the IPR framework via a short survey. The survey allows you to rate suppliers on various aspects of framework activity, including communication, pricing and tender responses. The survey will close on Friday 26th July.

PraxisAuril and ARMA have submitted a joint response to UUK's consultation on the proposed KE Concordat. PraxisAuril and ARMA have submitted a joint response to UUK's consultation on the proposed KE Concordat, building on our existing engagement with sector stakeholders including Research England, Innovate UK, NCUB, GuildHE, PraxisAuril, NCCPE and UUK in the development of the KE Framework overall. Together PraxisAuril and ARMA represent a significant proportion of the professional support for business engagement and research collaboration in UK universities and have a critical role to play in implementation of the Concordat. Our summary response to the KE Concordat consultation reflects our perspective on the opportunities and challenges that the Concordat, and associated metrics, presents for our members and member institutions.

Introduction to Healthcare Business Development is a three-day training course covering the key elements of Licensing and Business Development. It has a 12 strong faculty providing guidance on best practice using case study material. It also includes a hands-on example of negotiating a deal. Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust’s Innovation Forum aims to offer local companies with an interest in healthcare an insight into challenges faced at Cambridge University Hospitals. This is an opportunity to gain an ‘under the bonnet’ insight into a key challenge faced by the NHS on a daily basis: Frailty. We are delighted to be bringing together a range of perspectives in order to discuss and debate this theme and identify how innovation can help solve some of the issues faced. Reflecting on a fantastic couple of days at the Praxis Auril Conference, it confirmed my view that there is no substitute for spending time, away from the office, discussing the important things I am worrying about, learning from others, constructing solutions in the bar and meeting people I wouldn’t ordinarily meet. Email is fine, but face to face is better. This is why, as those of you who were there may recall, I am organising the Oxford UIDP Summit (31 July - 2 August) preceded by intensive workshops (30-31 July) at Keble college.
