This week Alasdair and Tamsin will take the BEIS UK R&D roadmap - hot-off-the-press - as the basis for their discussion.
The BEIS roadmap is a long-awaited document that sets out the government’s objectives for R&D supported by an increase in public investment in R&D to £22 billion by 2024-25. But what does the roadmap tell us about the future for KE and/or innovation? What new opportunities or challenges does it present to universities as they face an uncertain future and a high level of public scrutiny? At the same time, we know that KE has played a vital role during the COVID-19 crisis and that the public profile of industry collaboration, (not for profit) commercialisation, facilities hire, consultancy and so on has been raised. How does that image sit alongside the, still, oft-quoted comment that the UK is ‘good at research but poor at commercialisation’? How should we talk about KE as part of the national R&D effort to ensure that its many social, cultural and economic outcomes are recognised and celebrated?
