About the role

We are internationally recognised for our work to accelerate the discovery and development of treatments for hearing loss and tinnitus. Working with universities and companies around the world we are building research capacity, funding research projects to make important scientific discoveries and supporting the translation of promising discoveries into treatments.

You would join our Biomedical Research Group to lead our translational research work. You would manage a grant scheme to fund translational research projects and deliver exciting new initiatives to connect companies, academics and investors helping to advance the development of new treatments.

You will need a life science degree with excellent communication skills and a sound understanding of the commercialisation of research. But, above all, you must be able to demonstrate the drive and ability to make things happen.

Job Description Overall Purpose of the Role:

The purpose of the role is to accelerate the development of therapeutics to protect and improve hearing.

This will be achieved by:

  • Leading the strategic development and day-day management of our Translational Research Initiative for Hearing (TRIH)
  • Encouraging commercial investment in hearing research
  • Providing expert advice to companies already or considering working in hearing research
  • Identifying potential investment opportunities and leading scientific due diligence processes to assess promising opportunities
  • Working with external partners to develop new initiatives to accelerate the translation of promising scientific discoveries into real benefits for people with hearing loss or tinnitus.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the TRIH grant scheme to fund translational research projects that will accelerate the development of new therapeutics. This will include developing calls for research proposals, managing the application and peer-review processes, tracking the progress of funded-projects and reporting on research outcomes.
  • Identify potential investment opportunities for our investment partners and lead the scientific due diligence of any potential opportunities.
  • Source, compile and promote market intelligence to help companies understand and evaluate opportunities for developing new treatments
  • Identify and build relationships with companies, academics and other stakeholders involved in developing treatments for hearing loss
  • Use our networks to help build partnerships amongst academia, industry and investors to move promising research forwards
  • Support our fundraising teams in generating income to support and grow our translational research activities.
  • Contribute to the wider work of the biomedical team to deliver our research strategy and to raise the profile of hearing research amongst members, supporters and the general public.

Dimensions of the Role:

  • The post holder will report directly to the Executive Director of Research.
  • The role requires extensive engagement with external stakeholders including academic researchers, clinicians, biotech and pharma representatives and investors internationally.
  • As well as working closely with colleagues in the Biomedical Research Team, the role also involves working across other internal departments including Fundraising, Marketing and Communications. The post holder will act as an ‘in-house’ expert on matters relating to translational research.

Other Requirements:

  • Some travel nationally and internationally will be required to attend research conferences, identify research opportunities, promote investment into hearing research and build relationships with key stakeholders
  • Some work outside normal working hours may occasionally be required.  

Person specification

Essential

  • Experience in undertaking, managing, commercialising or funding research in an academic or business environment. 
  • Experience of critically analysing scientific research opportunities. 
  • Experience of communicating complex scientific information in a clear and understandable way.

Desirable

  • Experience of raising funds for research and development 
  • Investment experience in the health care sector would be an advantage, but is not essential 
  • Experience of business development within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical sectors would be an advantage, but is not essential 
  • Experience of communicating complex scientific information in a clear and understandable way to a lay audience.
  • Experience of communicating complex scientific information in a clear and understandable way to a lay audience.

Qualifications / Professional Training - Essential/Desirable

  • Degree in a life science subject or equivalent is required/A postgraduate degree Skills / Knowledge - Essential 
  • A keen interest in and knowledge of biomedical research. 
  • An understanding of business practices and customs involved in the commercialisation of research. 
  • An understanding of the drug discovery/development process 
  • Able to present scientific information concisely and accurately in written reports and presentations. 
  • Skilled in the use of standard MS Office packages and with on-line databases for literature searching (e.g. PubMed). 
  • Desirable: Knowledge of one or more aspects of hearing research would be an advantage, but it is not essential. Personal Qualities - Essential 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills able to network confidently with all stakeholders and influence them to bring about real changes. 
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
