Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides expert advice and assistance for research funding and contracts, research integrity and governance, technology transfer and the commercialisation of intellectual property, collaboration with industry, and public engagement with research.

has created 77 spinout and start-up companies since 2000 (with four of these having floated on the London AIM stock market) which raised >£140m investment in 2020/21; 

has a significant licensing portfolio and in 2020/21 generated £1.6m licensing income;

is a founding member of Setsquared, the global no. 1 university business incubator, which is an enterprise partnership of the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey; and

The University of Southampton now has an exciting opportunity for someone to join RIS’s successful and dynamic team as the Strategic Innovation Programmes Lead. The successful candidate will be working at a strategic level within the University to influence and build business cases for major new innovation centres and initiatives. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to commercially evaluate potential opportunities, build business propositions, advise leading University research groups and develop networks with industry for collaboration and innovation.  

In this role:

You will be a driver of major strategic projects to place the University at the forefront of ambitious new national innovation centres bringing businesses and academia together to collaborate on emerging technologies aligned to missions under the UK Innovation Strategy;

You will build key relationships with senior academic staff across the University and nationally, businesses, Innovate UK, BEIS and other government departments to shape the innovation priorities and funding propositions;  

You will guide the strategic direction, build the business case and be instrumental in winning significant funding to enable the establishment of new centres.
