Location: Cambridge, UK, joint AstraZeneca - CRUK Functional Genomics Centre, Milner Therapeutics Institute, Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre

Contract: Permanent, Full time

Salary: £35,000 - £43,000 per annum dependent on experience

Cancer Research UK and AstraZeneca have recently launched a new state of the art facility in the UK, dedicated to realising the full potential of functional genomics to accelerate the discovery of new cancer therapeutics.  The Joint AZ-CRUK Functional Genomics Centre (FGC) is a centre of excellence for CRISPR screening technology, cancer models and computational approaches to big data.

As part of this initiative, Cancer Research UK – Therapeutic Discovery Laboratories (CRUK-TDL) is now recruiting for a laboratory-based position at Senior Scientist level.  This role offers the unique opportunity to be part of an exciting team, operating at the forefront of research and technology development, gaining experience across the breadth of CRISPR technologies whilst it is being applied to clinically actionable programs.  Working in a diverse, dynamic, and cutting-edge scientific environment, this laboratory-based role will give you the opportunity to apply your molecular and cell biology expertise to build new capabilities and support our functional genomic screening efforts.

 

What will I be doing?

  • To advance the state-of-the-art in pooled CRISPR screening by leading the establishment of novel pooled CRISPR libraries and assay platforms
  • To implement novel high throughput cloning technologies for the generation of state-of-the-art pooled CRISPR libraries
  • To proactively identify, develop and evaluate new methods and technologies to deliver process improvements to the pooled CRISPR screening workflow 
  • To identify, develop and evaluate new phenotypic assays in a pooled screen setting (e.g. FACS, scRNA-seq)
  • To implement assays to interrogate complex disease relevant cellular models
  • To achieve external scientific visibility through oral conference presentations and authorship on peer-reviewed publications in the field of CRISPR technology advancement
  • Senior roles can include providing mentorship, training of staff and line management

What skills are you looking for?

You’ll be able to bring to the role:

  • Extensive proven experience of mammalian cell culture
  • In depth knowledge of genome engineering techniques (including genome-wide screening)
  • Significant experience in molecular biology techniques, vector design and construction, high throughput sequencing library preparation
  • Experience in working with complex disease relevant cellular models such as organoids and/or primary immune cells would be desirable
  • Ability to test and implement new assays and techniques including their troubleshooting.
  • Ability to learn quickly new techniques
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly build relationships and work well in a team
  • Demonstrable scientific and people leadership skills
