The Department and role purpose
Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development.
The Partnerships and Engagement team within the Research and Innovation Services directorate works with external organisations and our academic colleagues to facilitate the creation of new research and commercial opportunities and to ensure that Durham University’s research is world-changing with global impact and reach.
This is a new full-time post in Research and Innovation Services directorate. The post-holder will be based in the Partnerships and Engagement team, which provides a central hub for business and partnership development, impact support and the management of funding for impact and knowledge transfer. This post holder will develop and implement a strategy to support the growth of consultancy activity and income from across the University. The role will involve consultation and collaborative working across a wide range of internal and external services.
The remit of the Consultancy and Business Services Manager will span all work covered by the University’s ‘Work with Outside Bodies’ policy, which excludes research but encompasses consultancy, facilities, analytical services and the delivery of bespoke training courses to industry or other external clients.
There is an established process for the management of consultancy, which is currently delivered by colleagues within the central Research Operations team and by administrative staff in several academic departments. During the initial phases of this role, you will be expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing policies and processes and to examine and understand best practice across the higher education sector. Working in consultation with Head of Partnerships and Engagement and other senior colleagues, you will take responsibility for the development and implementation of a new model for efficiently managing and growing consultancy and business services activity across Durham University.
