Research Software Engineer - Virtual Reality Specialist (Fixed Term for 20 months): University of Derby

University of Derby’s College of Engineering and Technology in partnership with Bloc Digital are offering an exciting career-development opportunity to manage and deliver a challenging strategic Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project. Based at the company premises, you will be employed by the University as a KTP Associate but work under the terms and conditions of the company.

Using your knowledge and skills to support the business and achieve specific project aims, you will receive on-going support by a Company Supervisor, Academic Supervisor and Academic Lead from the University of Derby to help you deliver.  A personal training and development budget will also be available for you to access, as well as receiving access to the same training opportunities and facilities as University staff. 

The project

The College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Derby is committed to developing the next generation of high-achieving scientists, technologists and engineers. In partnership with Bloc Digital Limited, we are seeking to recruit a Research Software Engineer - Virtual Reality Specialist to work on an exciting time constrained Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Project, funded by Innovate UK. 

The project involves the integration of big data and visualization in a Virtual Reality environment.

Working with data scientists, you will help design and implement a Virtual Reality system which will take live data streams from source data systems and process it so that they can be visualized instantly in a virtual environment. This will require interactively extracting intelligence from real time data, producing 3D models and streaming information to a Virtual Reality framework for immersive visualization.

Creating Virtual Reality visualizations from real world data and analytics offers a unique opportunity for new markets and applications. You will plan and implement additions and updates to a Virtual Reality  framework to receive and interactively visualize data in Virtual Reality environment.

About you 

This position requires very hands on skills, therefore good system development, programming and database development experience is must. A good understanding of commercial grade software engineering and product development experience will be required. You will be highly committed and respond well to deadlines.

To be considered for this specific vacancy, you must be a graduate with a PhD in Computer Science or relative subject or equivalent experience. The ideal candidate will possess excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills (including report writing and presentations), strong analytical and numerical skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues. Most critically, you must have the nuance to efficiently manage the project from conception to completion within the stipulated time and financial constraints.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships - This full-time post is part-funded by the UK Government’s KTP programme. A KTP is a three-way project between a graduate, an organisation and a university.
