We are seeking an expert and highly motivated researcher to join the thriving Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG) and lead research on the tobacco industry and more broadly on commercial determinants of health. You will develop, coordinate and contribute to new and ongoing research projects relevant to STOP which may include:
- Understanding industry influence on policy at global, regional and national levels: analysing trends and emerging patterns of corporate political activity and their potential impact
- Corporate influence on conduct, interpretation and reach of science
- Tobacco industry interests in harm reduction and the development and marketing of tobacco and new nicotine products, including critically examining tobacco industry targeting of vulnerable groups and circumvention of legislation
- Compiling evidence on effective practices aiming to identify the specific types of research and knowledge translation most likely to enable policy change in this field
Our research is highly applied and as such, working within your areas of research, you will ensure findings can be applied to practice, for example by developing resources for advocates and stakeholders to address and counter industry interference, and systems for in-country data collection, with a focus on lower- and middle-income countries. You will actively disseminate research findings including working with the press.
You will be expected to lead research in your area, developing and supporting colleagues in the research team and also line managing research staff and supervising PhD students, where appropriate.
STOP
STOP is funded by $15m from Bloomberg Philanthropies, and is a tobacco industry watchdog that aims to deliver policy change. It is a partnership between TCRG, the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control, Thailand, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Paris, and Vital Strategies, New York.
As such it brings together global leaders in tobacco industry monitoring and research, advocacy, accountability and communication. This unique combination ensures our research is widely and effectively communicated and has maximum impact.
TCRG leads the tobacco industry monitoring and research arm of the work. With a focus on low and middle income countries, it extends the scale, geographic reach and responsiveness of our previous research.
Within the University of Bath, the STOP team is based within TCRG (currently homeworking) and includes staff from different faculties, departments and research centres.
This is a full-time role, for a fixed-term period, expected to be until May 2022 in the first instance.
