Intellectual Property Services Manager: UMI3 Ltd - University of Manchester

As part of our objective to become the world’s most effective University Technology Transfer Organisation, we are looking to appoint an experienced IP Services Manager to work within our operations team.

As Intellectual Property Services Manager, your primary role will be to ensure the integrity of University IP and that its management is cost effective, rigorous and robust. This includes management of filing of patent applications and their prosecution, management of the patent database, patent portfolio and other formalities associated with the creation and maintenance of IP.

Key Responsibilities

·Responsible for the timely, efficient and effective management of the University’s pre-deal IP portfolio and provision of advice and support relating to the post deal portfolio

·Ensure the integrity of University IP and that its management is cost-effective, rigorous and robust

·Devise, implement and manage robust, secure and failsafe procedures to ensure University patent coverage is maintained

·Ensure the maintenance of records which justify and qualify the University’s title to any invention which it purports to transact (license or assign)

·Manage UMI3’s relationships with its external patent agents to ensure efficient and effective provision of services, negotiates fees and manages the recurring tendering process

·Manage copyright queries on behalf of UMI3

·In conjunction with the relevant Project Manager, responsible for patent searching, ensuring it is conducted to a high standard enabling well informed decisions to be made on patenting and IP protection strategies

·Responsible for the line management and on-going training of two IP Services Executives, ensuring that the IP Services Executive has the capability to deputise for the IP Services Manager as required

·Prepare annual budget forecasts for all UMI3 patent activities

·Monitor where University academics have been cited in other relevant IP

Skills, Experience & Qualities

·The ability to manage a small team working in the IP services environment is essential to this role

·Thorough understanding of all aspects of intellectual property and how these relate to innovation (patents, know-how, copyright, trade secrets, etc.)

·Proactively recommends and where appropriate, implements new IP management strategies

·Demonstratable understanding of the processes involved in filing and maintaining patents in all major territories (UK, Europe, North America, China, Japan, Korea)

·Monitors global trends in IP administration and communicates these to the UMI3 team

·Accurate, methodical and able to work under pressure to strict deadlines

·Evidence of rigorous attention to detail and committed to continuous quality improvement

·Highly developed organisational skills with ability to prioritise workload

·Excellent written and verbal skills including the ability to review IP related documentation and generate professional and accurate reports

·Builds relationships with internal and external stakeholders

·Collaborates with colleagues and stakeholders to deliver departmental objectives

•CIPA Certificate in Patent Administration qualification is essential to this role.
