Duties and responsibilities
You will lead the Faculty of Natural Sciences Industry Partnerships and Commercialisation (IPC) team in maximising the impact of Imperial’s academic discoveries by stimulating, identifying and progressing opportunities to develop research and technologies through collaboration and commercialisation. Your responsibilities will include:
- Thought leadership and direct management of a high performing professional services team
- Co-creating the operating strategy for the Enterprise Division and providing strategic direction for the IPC team
- Promoting College’s capabilities and securing collaborative research and commercialisation income
- Supporting a growing number of academics in the achievement of their impact and collaboration goals, as part of their career progression
- Overseeing the assessment of research discoveries, analysis, evaluation, and advancement of those technologies through to market adoption via collaboration with industry, access to translational funds, licensing or startups
- Directing and managing industry partnerships and key stakeholder relationships.
You will be the key adviser to senior Imperial College leaders on strategic directions relating to Natural Sciences and will hold overall responsibility for the development and execution of the Faculty’s industry partnerships and commercialisation strategy. In addition, you will lead coordination of Imperial’s relationships with several strategic industry partners and key stakeholders seeking to maximise joint value across activities in research and commercialisation.
The role carries joint responsibility for the achievement of commercial targets related to licensing income and startup companies, in conjunction with directors of other faculty and commercialisation teams
You will need to demonstrate significant experience and ability in a wide range of competencies including the development of industry-academia strategic partnerships, negotiation and deal-making involving large-scale and complex bids involving academia and industry, commercialisation strategies, project management, and engagement with commercial partners/customers. You will have a thorough understanding of HEIs and research and product innovation processes, as well as university funding mechanisms.
You should demonstrate the ability to identify, organise and develop new areas of work, to define service objectives and to measure and report on performance. Diligence, patience, determination and a strong delivery focus are essential aptitudes. The position also requires an ability to understand the science involved in a range of new technologies in a wide variety of disciplines with a view to holding technical discussions across a number of scientific domains, as well as an appreciation of how new technology creates customer value, can have wide market scale and how Imperial and its stakeholders could realise that value and impact.
Experience in direct line management responsibilities, leading and managing strategic and operational change in complex corporate organisations with a scientific, technological, innovation focus, as well as proven competency in managing substantial budgets and resources is essential.
This career opportunity will greatly expand your experience gained in roles incorporating leadership on business development and strategic relationship management, such as Director of Academic Partnerships, Director of Enterprise, Director of Enterprise and Innovation, Head of Corporate Partnerships, Head of Enterprise, Head of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, Head of Tech Transfer, Head of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Head of Academic Partnerships or similar.

The salary range for this post is £70,000 - £90,000 per annum.
