Job Purpose

Kingston School of Art has an international reputation and cultivates a range of partnerships with industry, social enterprises and third sector. The purpose of this post is to work closely with academic colleagues in KSA in order to develop and deliver a strategy for stimulating growth in business engagement and Knowledge Exchange activities with a range of commercial, public and third sector partners and clients, as a means of increasing and diversifying income streams. Relevant activities can include contract research, consultancy, CPD, short courses and summer schools, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, generating income from Intellectual Property rights, and more; as well as enhancing KE partnerships and creating social value.

 

Role and Responsibility

Engage widely internally, with our academic staff, and build relationships with external businesses, public services, charities and communities to facilitate new strategic partnerships, initiate and support KE activity, raise the University’s profile and increase KE and surplus generating commercial income.

 

Using up-to-date market knowledge, work with the Head of Business Partnerships to identify new trends and market challenges and develop new opportunities for the University to deliver social, cultural and economic benefit.

 

Develop and manage a business development strategic plan, aligning KSA’s and the wider University’s expertise and capabilities to the requirements of specific markets / sectors, to enable a planned approach to the development of business growth, including undertaking research and market analysis to identify potential commercial opportunities and align these to the Faculty and University’s priorities, expertise and resources.

 

Undertake a relationship management role so that existing strategic relationships are maintained and grown to develop commercial returns and/or social value; lead on negotiations between potential clients and academic staff; and develop proposals for a range of income-generating products and services.

 

Support a range of specialist projects through the provision of costing and pricing, and undertake negotiation in conjunction with the Contracts Manager, to ensure appropriate sign-off and approval through established University processes. Manage projects and activities with external partners and provide expert knowledge to academics and businesses to ensure the institutional readiness for new programmes of activity and their excellent service delivery.

 

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

•            Up to date, sector-specific knowledge and experience

•            Broad knowledge of the business and enterprise development processes in the arts and creative industries

•            Proven record of network development across business, academia and/or government

•            Experience of a broad range of HE enterprise development activities including business development, knowledge transfer, consultancy, expert services, research and partnership management

•            Experience of supporting the degree apprenticeship life-cycle.

•            Experience of client and partnership relationship management

•            Understanding of the funding, reporting and quality assurance requirements for funded knowledge exchange programmes

 

Desirable

•            Broad knowledge of the business and enterprise development processes in the arts and creative industries

•            Experience of supporting the degree apprenticeship life-cycle.

 

Essential skills and competencies

•            Strong client relationship and partnership management skills with the ability to negotiate and conclude satisfactory partnerships, commercial deals and agreements

•            Bids and Tender Management experience

•            Excellent influencing skills at all levels of engagement

•            Excellent written and oral communication skills

•            Commitment to working as part of a team but also able to work on own initiative

•            Proactive with the ability to prioritise workload and activities and make decisions under pressure

•            Diplomacy, listening and questioning skills

•            Strong writing skills, eg for business proposals, bids and business plans

•            Strong organizational and project management skills, including setting and working to deadlines

•            Good analytical and practical problem-solving skills, attention to detail

•            Ability to identify opportunities and to facilitate their realisation and manage a broad ranging portfolio

•            High standard of financial literacy and numeracy. Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in the use of databases, spreadsheets & word processing software

•            Ability to identify and apply creative solutions in negotiations, often in the absence of any relevant precedent
