Consultancy is a valuable first step towards building long standing relationships between a University or Research Institute and a business, and can lead to research, a KTP, student placement, as well as income generation

It is also important for profile raising and delivering impact on behalf of your University/Research Institute. Effectively running a business from within a University/Research Institute can be challenging and this Forum will allow discussion around tangible methods to work through barriers, and challenges traditionally faced by University/Research Institute professionals.

The Forum also focuses on networking, providing a valuable platform to meet peers, discuss best practice, and interact with the course team and other contributors.


This half-day forum will take place on the day before our 2019 Conference. Please view the agenda below for further details regarding timings.

Meet the Speakers/Trainers

Sue Johnson

Course Director
Consultancy Manager, University of East Anglia
Sue Johnson is the Consultancy Manager at The University of East Anglia in Norwich. She is responsible for the management of the consultancy office and is a Director of UEA Consulting Ltd. Sue joined Research and Business Services at The University of East Anglia (UEA) in her current role in 2005. Her background is in plant molecular biology having previously worked at the John Innes Centre. After moving to The School of Biological Sciences at UEA she completed an MBA at the Norwich Business School which led to her move to the Technology Transfer and Commercialisation Group. Since becoming Consultancy Manager she has seen the business grow considerably and has overseen the formation of a number of successful consultancy clusters including Health Economics Consulting and Virtual Past. She is currently working with the LEP to deliver an Innovation Voucher Scheme, as part of the Regional Growth Fund, offering match funding to smes wishing to access university expertise.

Dr. Alistair McDermott

Co-Course Director
Director of Science Led Services, Imperial College London
Alistair McDermott is CEO of Imperial Consultants, the commercial gateway to the academic expertise of Imperial College London, where he is responsible for increasing the number of academics undertaking consultancy projects at Imperial College whilst maintaining the university consulting service as a self-sustaining business. Alistair has worked for a number of universities and Research Councils supporting those institutions in expanding their research and commercial portfolios. He has been involved in the development of large national and international scientific research facilities and creating industry led research programmes. He has led regional businesses support initiatives, set up start-up centres and created joint ventures. Alistair has a degree and PhD in Material Science from the University of Sheffield and an MBA from the Open University.

Josef Walker

Co-Course Director
Consultancy Manager, University of Leicester
Prior to joining the University of Leicester in July 2016 as the University’s Consultancy Manager, Josef was a Senior Project Manager for six years in the Oxford University Consulting (OUC) team at Oxford University Innovation, where he led a small team managing consultancy and services in medical and life sciences from the University of Oxford. Before this. Josef worked at a consultancy firm where he spent four and a half years providing support to pharmaceutical and biotech companies engaged in deal-making. He previously obtained his PhD in Immunology from University College London and spent time in post-doctoral research.

Dr. Rebecca Andrew

Director of Consultancy Engagement and Marketing, Imperial College London
Rebecca Andrew leads the consultancy engagement and marketing team for Imperial Consultants. Rebecca joined Imperial Consultants in 2011 following commercial roles within both the private sector and academia. Her previous roles include business to business sales and key account management for Felix Schoeller Imaging, bid management and commercial management for Unipart Group of Companies and business development for the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London. Rebecca has a Masters in Chemistry with German from UMIST and a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry from The University of Southampton.
