Join us in London at this forum to share and advance sector experience in commercialising and collaborating using health and lifescience research data

Interest by industry and other stakeholders in health and lifescience research data is growing. The sector is grappling to identify best practice.

This Forum is an opportunity for those working to commercialise health and lifescience research data, either directly or through collaborations, to share and discuss the challenges. The forum will operate in an open workshop environment, encouraging participants to share real life experiences.

The focus will be on academic healthcare research data (e.g. clinical trials, genomics, drug discovery & research data) rather than ‘real-world’ NHS patient treatment data and/or tangible materials (e.g. samples).

Please note that this is not a training course.

Who should attend?

The Forum will assume prior exposure to, or familiarity with, the issues accompanying the commercialisation of early stage healthcare data or datasets.

  • HEI, Charity or NHS Technology Transfer or IP Commercialisation staff who have been in or exposed to a commercialisation role with a focus on healthcare for at least 3 years.
  • HEI/Health charity/NHS research contracts staff who have been in a contracts role with a focus on data/health research data for at least 3 years.

Duration: 1 day, London, 20 January 2020

Venue: BMA House, Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 9JP (directions)

Forum Objectives

To share experience and issues associated with commercialising health related research data; to create a ‘community of practice’ equipped to commercialise health research data and to provide guidance to the relevant sectors across UK.

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the legal framework around commercialising health or patient data; be aware of appropriate consents and ethical approvals required before any commercialization can be considered
  • Be aware of existing publicly available policies and guidance (e.g.  Biobank policies, NHS recent paper, OLS policy (due out soon), general info& data principles/GDPR, AMRC digital guidelines)
  • Be able to articulate when it is appropriate to commercialise health or patient data and when it is not
  • Be able to articulate the wider (non-financial) benefits of commercialising health or patient data to society and understand a variety of views on the subject
  • Understand the value of different types of patient or health data to different industries
  • Consider how terms appropriate for commercialising patient/health research data may vary from usual terms for commercialisation of other assets

Organising panel: Tony Hickson, Sue Sundstrom, Fred Kemp and Maryam Atakhorrami
